Always an interesting conversation when talking to multi national companies or companies with very strict data residency rules in terms of what services hold what data.
So I thought it would be useful to summarise the information and some considerations.
Overall data is held based on the tenancies default data location which is defined by the customer when the tenancy was created.
Microsoft have the following useful graphic that shows the core workloads and where the data is stored in terms of the service.
One of the new and recently highlighted key areas of concern is Giphy since Facebook’s recent acquisition so you should be wary of the hooks Giphy has into Teams whilst we wait for MS’s offical statement on data being shared with Giphy. Within the below article all MS currently call out is that this is a 3rd party service.
“Media used in chats (except for Giphy GIFs which aren’t stored but are a reference link to the original Giphy service URL, Giphy is a non-Microsoft service) is stored in an Azure-based media service that is deployed to the same locations as the chat service.”
So in summary this should help with some of those conversations!
